What the toolkit is designed to help you do
- Identify the functional handwriting problem before selecting an adaptation.
- Compare pencil grips, larger foam barrels, and optional pencil-weight trials.
- Record what changes in legibility, mark visibility, control, speed, comfort, and endurance.
- Gather student and teacher feedback and make a practical classroom recommendation.

Free Decision Tree Tuesday #33: Pencil Grip, Larger Barrel, or Weighted Pencil?

Identify what limits functional handwriting, trial an adaptation, and compare real writing performance. The images show the actual pencil adaptations and a student writing sample shared with permission.
The free decision tree helps you decide what to trial. The toolkit helps you document what works.

What’s planned inside
Clinical decision guides, an adaptation comparison reference, a structured trial-and-data form, and a concise documentation template. Final contents may change as the resource is developed.
A functional approach—not a one-size-fits-all grip recommendation
A grip that looks unusual does not necessarily need correction. Likewise, a weighted pencil is not an automatic solution for faint marks. The best choice is the adaptation that demonstrates meaningful benefit for the individual student in authentic writing tasks.
Educational resource for OT practitioners. Clinical decisions should be individualized and made in the context of the student’s educational participation.
